Dedicated VPS FAQs
Answers about VPS resources, operating systems, security responsibilities, snapshots, and server management.
What is a virtual private server (VPS)?
A virtual private server, also called an instance, is a dedicated virtual machine for running websites, web applications, APIs, databases, and other software. It provides reserved compute, memory, and SSD storage in a flexible cloud environment.
What is included with a VPS plan?
Each plan includes a virtual private server with a fixed allocation of vCPUs, RAM, SSD storage, and outbound data transfer. You can choose a Linux or Windows Server image, select a US region, and manage your instance through the control panel.
What can I run on a dedicated VPS?
You can host custom websites, web applications, APIs, databases, development environments, internal business software, and other compatible workloads. With root or administrator access, you choose and install the software, services, and configuration your project requires.
Which operating systems are available?
Dedicated VPS plans are available with Linux or Windows Server operating system images. Instances begin with a clean operating system environment so you can install and configure the web server, runtime, database, and applications that fit your requirements.
Who is responsible for securing my VPS?
You control the operating system and software running on your VPS, so you are responsible for access management, application security, software updates, and server configuration. Built-in firewall controls help you manage inbound traffic, and optional patch maintenance is available when needed.
Are backups included with my VPS?
Automatic snapshots are available as an optional service. Snapshots provide a recovery point for your instance and can help protect against accidental changes or data loss. You should also maintain backups appropriate for your application and recovery requirements.
How do I create a VPS instance?
Use the instance configurator to select your US location, Linux or Windows Server image, plan type, network option, and server size. Then choose an instance name and quantity to continue to checkout. Your new VPS is provisioned after your order is completed.
Are email accounts included with a VPS?
No. Dedicated VPS plans provide server resources and infrastructure rather than managed email mailboxes. You can run your own compatible mail solution or pair your account with our Email Hosting Plans, Google Workspace, or Microsoft 365.
